Samenvatting

In December 1867 Hendrik Conscience takes the train to the Netherlands with a specialmission: promoting his Romantische werken, edited by A.W. Sijthoff, Leiden. In his correspondencewith his Flemish publisher J.P. van Dieren he writes an elated report of hisoverwhelming success as elocutionist of his work. In this article additional information isgiven about some aspects of his ten-days’ campaign. The greatest attention is given to thereport of his performancesin the Dutch newspaper press. It turns out that not everyonewas pleased with the choice of his texts and even less with his way of reciting. Finally anattempt is made to give a word of explanation for the so divergent responses to Consciences“uitgalmkunst”.
