In this paper, the first results of a perception study in Flanders are reported. In order to gaininsight in the way Flemish language users perceive the Flemish linguistic landscape, 80informants were subjected to a qualitative interview in which they were asked to expoundtheir views of the Dutch language situation. Moreover, they had to judge seven audiorecordings, spoken in Standard Dutch or in several regional versions of tussentaal (literally“in-between-language’). By means of a qualitative analysis of the interviews, differenttypes of perceptions of the Dutch language situation are identified.
