Samenvatting

ldentity construction in Belgian, passivist resistance newspapers from World War I isstudied in this article, by drawing on Membership Categorization Analysis. More specifically, the ever-changing and multifaceted dynamics between the ingroup and outgroupare scrutinized. The ingroup (' us') consisted, at the core, of the passivists within theFlemish Movement, and the outgroup ('them') was mostly taken up by the German occupier. However, the analysis proves the intricacy of both groups extended well beyondthat. Special attention is directed towards the activists, whom took up a particularly complexplace in between both groups. Overall, the analysis, which takes a social-constructionistviewpoint, illustrates identity construction's ephemeral nature.
