In this article I examine the literary views of the Russian-American author VladimirNabokov (1899-1977) using the work of the Swiss critic Jean Rousset (1910-2002).Rousset’s Forme et Signification (1963) displays a combination of phenomenological literarycriticism with structuralist interests. It will be shown that his thoughts and methodtherefore provide a valuable context to understand Nabokov’s views on writers, readersand literary communication.
