In Flemish universities, as indeed in Flemish higher education in general,the issue of which (if any) standard should be used in the teaching of theDutch language is increasingly pregnant. Should standard Dutch be taught,or should Flemish varieties be taken into account? The question is also raisedin the Dutch departments of Belgian French-speaking universities. The presentsurvey brings out the great diversity that prevails in this respect, from themost tolerant - or lax? - position to be found in Namur, to the firm standtaken at the University of Liège.
