This paper reports on research into the acquisition of the Maldegemdialect as a second language by children who were raised in Standard Dutch. It focuses on the intersystemic correspondence between phonological elementsof the first and second language as one of the factors that influencesthe process of acquisition. Attention is also paid to the processes that shapean interlanguage, especially to the process of overgeneralization. With respectto this process three hypotheses are formulated. These hypotheses are testedagainst the results of an analysis of spoken data.
