Abstract

An annotated listing of documented musical adaptations of works by Oscar Wilde, including detailed information on composers, lyricists, performances (venues and dates) where available.

Author Biography

Tine Englebert, Ghent University

Martine (Tine) Englebert obtained her PhD in Literary Studies with the dissertation Music for Wilde. The relationship between literary text and libretto: an analysis of the themes and the typology of the female protagonists in The Birthday of the Infanta by Oscar Wilde  (Ghent University, Belgium, 2017). Her research interests include the relationship between literature and libretto, the presence of music in Wilde’s works, and the musical adaptations of his oeuvre. Tine is a librarian in the City of Ghent’s public library network. She is also a Research Associate at the Department of Literary Studies, Ghent University. From 2004 to 2010, Tine served as Musical Editor for The Oscholars, an e-journal dedicated to current research on Wilde Studies, delivering the recurrent section “Mad, Scarlet Music” which explored Wilde’s relationship to music, the musical adaptations and versions of Wilde’s work, and their performance. Since 2012 she has performed similar duties for Rue des Beaux Arts, the e-journal of the Société Oscar Wilde en France. She has previously published in the journal Documenta, contributed to reference works on Wilde, and presented papers at various academic conferences.
