Assessing the Age of Wild Lungfish: Comments on James et al. (2010)

Anne Kemp

Abstract

A new method based on analysis of the radiocarbon levels in lungfish scales, laid down in the growing scale before, during, and after the discharge of atomic nuclear devices between 1945 and 1966, was published by James et al. (2010) in Radiocarbon. Successive samples from scales of lungfish can be expected to show changes in the 14C signal, and indicate the age of the fish. This complex technique is heavily dependent on good sampling technology, and on an understanding of the structure of a lungfish scale.
