Abstract

The role of lymphatics in placentationhas been scantily studied and the trueexistence of placental lymphatics is underdebate. Numerous blood and lymphaticlineagemolecule markers are now availableand they are expressed in human placentaltissue. D2-40 expression at the placentalstromal level seems to indicate that networkforming,podoplanin-expressing cells may actas a reticular-lymphatic-like conductivenetwork. This exciting area at the intersectionof perinatology and lymphology needs furtherinvestigation.
