Author Guidelines
How to Submit to ITLT
Manuscript submissions, reviews and revisions are handled online through the Open Journal Systems (OJS) platform. No hard copy submissions are accepted.
Authors must register for an account before submitting a manuscript. The registration system gives you the option of registering as an author and/or reviewer.
General Guidelines
Before submitting your work to Issues and Trends in Learning Technology, please carefully consider its appropriateness for this journal. ITLT publishes articles about research, theory, practice, and praxis in learningl technology, with a particular focus on:
- instructional design, curriculum integration, and innovative pedagogy.
- online learning, distance learning, and hybrid online/classroom learning.
- user experience design and human-computer interaction.
- technological literacy.
- emerging technologies.
The criteria provided in the ITLT review form may be helpful in assessing the suitability of your manuscript.
All submissions to ITLT should be original, unpublished and not under consideration by another journal. Authors retain copyright to submitted content, and may submit articles to other journals, enter them into institutional directories or self-publish them or subsequent to publication in ITLT.
Submission Types
Research Articles
Research articles may focus on any aspect of educational technology, or related trends and issues. These articles include literature reviews, explanations of research methodology, and analysis of findings.
Implementation/Application Articles
These papers present a specific technology, application, method or implementation of a technology. They offer a discussion of the literature related to the application along with a discussion of the major issues for future research needed to validate the application.
Graduate Student Articles
Graduate student articles published by Issues and Trends in Learning Technology represent exceptional research and/or analysis by graduate degree candidates in the field of educational technology. These articles are reviewed by ITLT editors, but are not subject to peer review by our Editorial Board.
Manuscript Length
The recommended length for ITLT submissions is 3000-8000 words. Manuscripts outside this range are acceptable if justified by the scope and quality of the article.
Manuscript Format
Manuscripts must be submitted to ITLT in the format described by the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 6th edition (APA style). The following requirements for manuscripts are intended to clarify and supplement APA style. Where there is ambiguity or disagreement, the guidelines below take precedence.
Text and layout
- Use the Times or Times New Roman typeface, 12-point font size, for all text.
- Use the standard formatting for the five levels of APA headings:
- Centered, boldface, title case.
- Flush left, boldface, title case.
- Indented, boldface, lowercase paragraph heading ending with a period.
- Indented, boldface, italicized, lowercase paragraph heading ending with a period.
- Indented, italicized, lowercase paragraph heading ending with a period.
- Type all special characters. Do not render characters as images except where necessary, as in videos, or in legends within a figure.
- Use the portrait page orientation for all pages, with uniform margins of 1 in. (2.54 cm) on all sides.
- Double-space all lines in the main text. Single-space lines of text in tables and figures.
- Use only a single space following a sentence-ending punctuation mark.
- Do not include headers or footers. Running heads are not required.
- Avoid using footnotes.
- Left-align all text.
Manuscript sections
- The following sections are required, and should be presented in the order listed. Each should begin on a new page.
- title page (including manuscript title, author byline, institutional affiliation, and author note)
- abstract (150-250 words)
- text
- references
- tables (each on a separate page with the relevant caption)
- figures (each on a separate page with the relevant caption and optional legend)
- appendices
- Acknowledgements for grant support or other financial assistance should be included in the author note on the title page. Individual acknowledgements to non-authors, as for assistance with research or a manuscript, should be included as a note to appear after the references.
File types
- Manuscripts may be submitted in Microsoft Word format (.DOC or .DOCX), Rich Text Format (.RTF), or OpenDocument format (.ODF). Microsoft Word .DOCX files are preferred.
- Figures, diagrams and other images may be submitted as .PNG, .GIF, or .JPG/.JPEG files, with minimal compression or color loss. .PNG files are preferred.
- Please submit images in the highest resolution available, to a maximum of 1024 by 1024 pixels.
- Please submit images in full RGB color, except in cases where color distracts from the meaning of the image, or where the image is of something that has no color (i.e. screenshots of black-and-white or grayscale software).
- Supplemental materials such as figures, diagrams, tables, appendices, videos, and software should be submitted as separate files.
- The file name should specify the type and number of the item, and should include the appropriate file type suffix (i.e. “table_no_2.PNGâ€).
- Include the number and caption within the manuscript, in accordance with standard APA style. In place of the material itself, however, please type the name of the appropriate file.
- Special arrangements can be made for supplementary materials that include multiple files or require special hardware or software to support, such as desktop or web-based applications, games, and simulations. Please contact ITLT Assitant Managing Editor Margherita Berti at berti@email.arizona.edu.
